"When You Least Expect It"

Most of us have seen or have heard about photographs that have people or unusual mists or orbs that where not present when the photograph was taken. I have a collection of photographs just like the above mentioned. I have gained many of these pictures from readers and family and friends. I am currently starting a second photo album because the pictures keep on coming. But, pictures are not the only forms of media that often pick up unusual phenomena. With the increasing popularity of video cameras and both tape and digital recorders, these other forms of media are also garnering their fair share of paranormal phenomena. Most ghost researchers know that two of the basic items needed on an investigation are the camera and tape recorder. The focus of this column will be on the use of tape or digital recorders frequently used in most investigations. The best example of the usefulness of a tape recorder is contained in the following story that I originally published back in 1997. While those involved in the story swore to its authenticity, I personally never heard the recording in question. I'll leave it to you to decide for yourself whether or not it is believable.

Our story begins in Albany New York on a warm fall afternoon. A man and his wife are visiting the grave of her recently deceased mother. Hidden within the pocket of the man's coat is a tape recorder that he intended to use as his wife reminisced about her mother. With the recorder on, the woman began to speak of her childhood and of her mother. She talked about the family vacations, the sibling rivalries and the love that she had shared for her mother. As the woman spoke she became increasingly upset. She suddenly got up and ran back in the direction of the car. The man followed, leaving the still recording tape player on the headstone of the mother's grave. While the woman remained in the car, the man returned to the grave to retrieve the recorder. Upon arrival at their home, the man re-wound the tape and listened to it as his wife lay in their bed. At the point of the tape where his wife had returned to the car, there was nothing but the sounds of retreating foot steps. The silence of background noise was suddenly replaced with what the man thought of as static. Although the static changed in tone and pitch, it was still static. The man's wife suddenly appeared In the doorway and asked, "whose voice is that on the tape?"

The man looked at his wife puzzled and responded, "That's not a voice hun, it's just static." The woman approached and taking the tape recorder from him said, "I know a voice when I hear it." She re-wound the tape and listened intently, when the static started again the woman's hand covered her mouth quickly. "It's my mother!" She exclaimed. The man stared back at her with a puzzled look. He could hear only static. His wife smiled widely and started to softly weep. She listened to the remainder of the tape and at its conclusion, seemed happier than she had been for weeks. The woman explained to her husband that her mother had left her a message on the tape, and while she never did tell him just what had been said, her own spirit was lifted and from that day on never had any difficulty talking about her mother or of death. Did the woman's mother really send her a message from beyond the grave, or was the woman's grief so great that it created the illusion in her mind? The only person that really knows for sure resides in a cemetery in Albany New York.

Be sure to check back periodically. I have made a number of EVP recordings over the last year and as soon as I convert them to WAVE format, I'll post them here for you. Until next time.
